Shelby County K-12 Education

Shelby County offers excellent educational opportunities for our youth. There are 8 public school systems and 2 parochial/private school systems, with approximately 10,000 total students enrolled.

The eight public school systems include Anna, Botkins, Fairlawn, Fort Loramie, Houston, Jackson Center, Russia and Sidney City schools. Shelby County schools offer a progressive and personal education program to meet the varied needs of today’s students. Low pupil-teacher ratios and modern facilities make going to school a rewarding, enjoyable experience. The educational philosophy here has never strayed from the old and very basic goal to give young people the skills they need to become productive citizens. Students may be active in theater, music, athletics, leadership clubs and academic societies during their school years. Locally sponsored scholarships help send many graduates on to post-secondary education institutions.

The parochial/private school systems include Christian Academy and Holy Angels/Lehman Catholic, with both being located in Sidney. Both schools offer the same excellent educational and extracurricular opportunities as the public schools, while also focusing on developing the student’s abilities and gifts in a Christian atmosphere. Lehman Catholic High School is the only North Central accredited, Catholic high school in a six-county service area. The Ohio Academy of Science presented Lehman with the 2021 ‘Thomas Edison STEM Award’, making this the 33rd consecutive year they have won the award. Further, in 2020, Dayton Workforce Partnerships, awarded one of its ‘Retention of Talent’ scholarships to Lehman High School senior, Seth Peoples.
